Freud, one of the grand masters of narrative, knew that the past is not fixed in the way that linear time suggests. We can return. We can pick up what we dropped. We can mend what others broke. We can talk with the dead.
OH LORD I SIMPLY MUST GO
Above all, don’t lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others.
The Blue Devils at Canboulay 2014
One of the highlights for me at Carnival in Trinidad, is seeing the Blue Devils or Jabs of Paramin come alive. It’s a treat, and real joy to come face-to-face with one of these seemingly scary and possessed creatures. There’s the entertainment aspect of it, also the commercial, but deeper than that, there’s something more authentic in this artform, maybe the most authentic and sublime element of Carnival still existing.
Like the mountains of Jamaica, that gave rise to the sound of Bob Marley. The hillsides of Paramin, are steeped with a heritage uniquely Trinidadian and profoundly beautiful. Learn more about the Blue Devils in director Janine Fung’s awesome documentary, Blue Devils of Paramin (see below).
